Why bother, plants have feelings too!

Watching a recent video of a cosmetics entrepreneur sharing her tips on eliminating some toxins from our everyday life was as ludicrous as it was informative.

Sound advice was shared in her thoughts on how to eliminate some daily toxins – found in the air we breath, drinking water, skincare products to household chemicals, plastic containers and ingesting animal products. What bemused me though was that she went on to question why vegetarians and vegans base their eating choices around the sake of caring for animals, yet eat plants; “why would they (vegetarians/vegans) be insensitive to the feelings of plants!”

In response I have found an article from Mikko Alanne, a rabble-rouser, who, rather eloquently, articulates my shared view.

All vegans and vegetarians have heard it: “But what about the plants? What about their feelings? They feel pain, too. Don’t you feel bad for the carrots? You are killing them, you know.” Sorry, but the above represent the dumbest set of excuses I’ve ever heard as to why some people claim eating animals is morally equivalent to eating plants. Tellingly, these people’s concern for plant feelings has not reared its head over eating a baked potato with steak, or seeing capers in chicken piccata. No, it’s arisen because the conversation has turned to cruelty toward the animals we eat, something that’s difficult to swallow. If you’re one of those plant feelings people, it’s time we had a chat. Remember elementary school biology? Even a cursory review tells us that plants and animals are different. Significantly different. For example: Plants have neither brains nor nervous systems with which to feel pain. Does this mean that we can say with absolute certainty that plants cannot have a consciousness or feel pain? I suppose we can never be 100 percent certain… but here’s what we do know — for sure — the animals we eat are conscious. And they do most certainly feel pain. And loneliness. And fear. Just like your dog. Your cat. And you.

As a leafy green, but not to eat, I give this Physicians Formula Organic Wear mascara the thumbs up. And 47% of the total ingredients are apparently from Organic Farming.

  2. Thanks for this sharing!

I guess it boils down, (excuse the pun) to which is the lesser of two evils. Because let’s face it, vegans and vegetarians aren’t working towards perfection (we wish), just perhaps more willing and eager to cut down on the pain inflicted on some of the earth’s inhabitants.

I'd love to hear from you...
