Picture guide to buying sustainable leather

Q. How do I know if it’s animal or man-made leather I’m buying?
Leather labelling
A. Look for these icons, the middle two indicate man-made.

New textile labelling rules were approved by the European Parliament in May 2011.

So these rules state that any use of animal-derived materials have to be clearly stated on product labels.

Let’s face it, with so many high-end vegan leather shoe options available nowadays consumers often find it hard to distinguish between animal and cruelty-free leather; the new labelling rules allow easy identification of animal-derived leather when purchasing products.

Certainly necessary and beneficial for consumers who wish to avoid animal leather products for ethical reasons.

Sometimes the product simply says “man-made”.
